What is the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded program in Australia that provides support to people with disabilities. The NDIS aims to help people with disabilities live more independently and participate more fully in their communities.

The NDIS is a needs-based scheme, which means that the support provided is tailored to each individual's specific needs and goals. To be eligible for the NDIS, a person must have a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to participate in everyday activities.

Once a person is deemed eligible for the NDIS, they will work with a planner to develop a personalized plan that outlines the support they will receive. The plan will identify the individual's goals and the reasonable and necessary supports needed to achieve those goals. The plan may include funding for things like therapy, equipment, and home modifications.

The NDIS also provides funding for participants to purchase services and supports from a range of providers, including disability service providers, mainstream service providers, and informal supports such as family and friends. Participants have choice and control over the services and supports they receive, and can choose who provides them.

One of the key features of the NDIS is that it is portable, which means that support can be accessed wherever a person lives, and can continue even if the person moves to a different location. The NDIS also provides support for participants to transition from school to work or further education.

The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), which is an independent government agency. The NDIA is responsible for assessing eligibility for the NDIS, developing and reviewing individual plans, and working with participants to ensure they are receiving the supports they need.

Overall, the NDIS is an important program that provides much-needed support to people with disabilities in Australia. It is designed to give people with disabilities greater choice and control over the support they receive, and to help them live more independently and fully participate in their communities.
